The Art of Nita Mehnert

Art is my life. I can’t not make art. For me, my work is part of my DNA. It keeps me sane. I am not healthy unless I am creating. As a child, my joy came from making my toys rather than just playing with store bought ones. There isn’t a period in my life where my work was not a major driving force. Inspiration is everywhere I look. A walk through a hardware store can spark a myriad of ideas. Shapes and forms jump out at me. A plumbing component becomes part of a sculpture; a box of nails, a halo for an abstract figure. The medium itself inspires me. The tactile plasticity of clay requires a different set of skills than metal or glass. All are components of my sculptures which are based on my dreams and often, my nightmares.
